Diamond Terminology
Buying a diamond doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Once you understand the 4 C’s, you’ll know exactly what you’re paying for - and what actually matters to you.
The 4 C’s stand for:
-
Cut
-
Colour
-
Clarity
-
Carat
Let’s break them down in simple terms.
1. Cut – The Sparkle Factor
Cut is the most important of all the C’s.
It’s what makes a diamond sparkle.
Cut doesn’t mean shape (round, oval, emerald etc). It refers to how well the diamond has been cut and proportioned to reflect light.
A well-cut diamond:
-
Reflects light beautifully
-
Looks bright and fiery
-
Sparkles from every angle
A poorly cut diamond:
-
Can look dull or glassy
-
May appear darker in the centre
✨ What we recommend:
Always prioritise cut. An Excellent or Ideal cut will make even a smaller diamond look more impressive than a larger one with a poor cut.
2. Colour – How White Is It?
Diamond colour is graded from D (completely colourless) down to Z (noticeably yellow/brown).
To the naked eye, most people cannot tell the difference between:
-
D, E, F (Colourless)
-
G, H (Near colourless)
💡 In real life:
-
G or H colour often looks beautifully white once set in a ring.
-
You usually don’t need to pay for a D unless you want the absolute highest grade.
✨ What we recommend:
For the best balance of beauty and value, G–H colour is perfect for most engagement rings.
3. Clarity – Natural Marks Inside The Diamond

Clarity refers to tiny natural marks inside the diamond called inclusions.
All diamonds form under pressure — so small internal marks are completely normal.
Clarity grades range from:
-
FL / IF (Flawless)
-
VVS
-
VS
-
SI
-
I
But here’s what actually matters:
👉 Can you see it with your eyes?
Many VS and even some SI diamonds are “eye-clean”, meaning you cannot see any inclusions without magnification.
✨ What we recommend:
VS1 or VS2 clarity is a sweet spot. Beautifully clean without overpaying for microscopic perfection.
4. Carat – The Size
Carat simply refers to weight, not sparkle.
A higher carat:
-
Means a larger diamond
-
Increases the price significantly
But size isn’t everything.
A well-cut 1.00ct diamond can look more impressive than a dull 1.50ct.
✨ What to consider:
-
Your finger size
-
The setting style
-
Your budget
-
Whether you prefer size or sparkle
💍 What Should You Prioritise?
If you’re unsure, here’s a simple guide:
1️⃣ Prioritise Cut
2️⃣ Choose a colour that looks white to your eye (G–H is perfect for most)
3️⃣ Aim for eye-clean clarity (VS range is ideal)
4️⃣ Choose a carat weight that suits your style and budget
🌱 Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds
Both follow the exact same 4 C grading system.
-
Lab grown diamonds are chemically and visually identical to natural diamonds.
-
They simply have a different origin.
-
They often allow you to go bigger or higher quality within the same budget.
